Fresco depicting Atalanta and Meleager resting after successfully hunting the Calydonian boar
Summary
editDescriptionFresco of Atalanta and Meleager resting after the successful Calydonian Boar hunt.jpg |
English: This fresco from the House of the Centaur (Casa di Centauro) in Pompeii depicts Atalanta, standing at left, and Meleager, sitting at center, resting after successfully hunting the Calydonian boar, which had been terrorizing the countryside. The boar had been sent by Artemis to ravage Calydon in Aetolia because its king hadn’t honored her in his rites to the gods. Atalanta was the first to wound the boar with her arrow, and Meleager supported her claim. Unfortunately, this led to conflict with his uncles, leading to tragic consequences for all involved.
