Major Armes Dies. Was Civil War Veteran. Atlantic City, New Jersey; December 19, 1919. Major Augustus Armes, U.S. Army retired, the last surviving member of the staff of Major General Winfield Scott Hancock in the Civil War, died at his home in Ventnor yesterday. He was 75 years old. Major Armes wan a native of Fairfax Court House, Virginia, and was one of the few young men in that section to enter the service of the Union. At the close of the war he accepted a commission in the regular Army and later commanded forces In many battles with the Indians in the west.
