Im so genannten Herdgussverfahren wird eine Ofenplatte gegossen, wie sie früher als Heizungsutensil gebraucht wurde. Die reliefartige hölzerne Bildform wird in das Sandbett ("Herd") gelegt; in den negativen Abdruck läuft das geschmolzene Eisen ein, nach dessen Abkühlen die gusseiserne Ofenplatte vorliegt.
