Description

This Glow-Worm is a wingless female beetle ( on a bracken frond , close to the ground ) / 15-25mm in length / emitting a yellowish - green light from the end of the abdomen / trying to attract a male , which can fly. The cold light is formed when "Luciferin"( a protein like substance) is oxidised ( bioluminescence) / the light takes a few minutes to switch on or off . The beetles rarely feed / the female can glow for a few weeks until she mates / dying soon after laying her eggs which hatch in 30-45days / the Larvae live for 2 years , feeding on snails , then pupating into the adult beetle .
