Description

Had a bit of a problem with some locals here whilst taking this photo. Not considered appropriate, apparently. I guess Lenin was removed fairly soon afterwards. Apparently a gift from the Soviet Union, but with an interesting history.....allegedly! . It was captured as war booty for melting down by the German army in 1943 in Puschkino outside Leningrad. It was designed by Prof. MG Maniser in 1927.. However, it was preserved by anti-fascists, prisoners of war and forced labourers until the arrival of the Soviet army in July 1945, when it was erected upon a temporary plinth. Thereafter, the statue was bequeathed to Eisleben by the Soviet Government, and in return, the local Mansfelder miners bequeathed a statue of Ernst Thaelmann to Puschkino. This statue was thus the first Lenin in Germany. In 1991, the bronze statue weighing nearly 3 tons was taken down and transported to the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin. Well, actually, it was a Soviet gift to bring the people in the Russian Zone together in friendship with those of the Soviet union, and the story was invented. Behind, the state HO (Handelsorganisation) Golden Star hotel. Eisleben was known as Lutherstadt because Martin Luther was both born and died in the town. In 2007, it was reported that a vacant restaurant might reopen, called Am Lenindenkmal matthias-kuhn-pressespiegel.blogspot.de/2007/04/lenin-res...
