English: 30 January 2010. New lighting columns await connection on the Ferry Lane Estate.
So it's goodbye to the light-polluting and inefficient yellow globes; and welcome to modern white-light columns which beam downwards - where it's needed. My former ward colleague Cllr Lorna Reith took the lead on issues concerning Ferry Lane Estate, where she lives. Over the years Lorna and I nagged away about renewing the lighting there. New lighting columns were installed in two phases. Lorna consulted with the residents' association (FLAG) and agreed which areas had priority. The first to be done were the central footpath and other less well-lit areas where people felt unsafe. Then the river towpath. (The lights there will have special fitments so as not to disturb local bat life.) In 2010 the rest of Ferry Lane Estate was getting new lighting columns installed. (When I took this photo, some were awaiting cable connection; then disconnection and removal of the old columns.) |
