| Description | Hale Brothers Department Store in San Francisco (1912). The Hale family opened a dry goods store in San Jose in the 1870s. Marshal Hale, Sr. founded the store, but the company would see the most success under Marshal, Jr. and Prentis Hale. The younger Marshal oversaw a branch in New York from 1887 to 1897. The company officially incorporated in 1896 as the Hale Brothers Stores, Inc. Their first branch in San Francisco opened in 1891. Their largest store was here, built by the Reid Brothers in 1912. Marshal grew to hold many positions in dry goods organizations and served as director of the Bank of America. He was also Chairman of the Republican State Central Committee in 1931. Prentis Hale oversaw operations until his retirement in 1972. Shortly after, the company was renamed Carter Hawley Hale. The building was sold to the J. C. Penney Company in 1944, who operated a store here until 1971. In 1986, Carter Hawley Hale was merged into Carter Hawley Hale and became one of the 6 largest department store chains in the country. However, mismanagement forced the company into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1991. |
