I thought it would be interesting to show the evolution of the same concept, starting from Germany in the thirties, going to Kiev up to the eighties, and ending in Japan at Kyocera. The design of the cameras stay the same, but when the USSR engineers just added a new lens (the Helios instead of the Jupiter Zeiss copies), flash sync, and some cheap plastic to receive film and rewind, the Japanese added full automation. At the end there is a factor 5 in price (excepted for some lenses like the Orion 15 or the Russar) but I do not think the pictures are much better. Just the time to take a picture and the number of failed shots... We will juge reliability on several years, but my bet is on the Kiev, although several of the slow speeds do not work properly. |
