Description

Three of Harrods Electric vehicles at The Regent Street motor show 2017. Left...Pope Waverley One of the earliest and best known electric cars was the Pope waverley built by Indiana Bicycle Company, Indianapolis USA. Who produced cars from 1898 to 1916. This particular vehicle was built around 1899 and first registered in the UK in 1904 and is still used in London for occasional deliveries to the palaces. Braking is from two pedals.The one on the left controls the drive motor armature shaft brake.While the right hand pedal operates a 9in. drum brake on each rear wheel,Length 7ft 8in. wood chassis speed 8 mph powered by 8x6v Automotive Chloride lead acid batteries. ( Len Brown "In Photo" is the curator of Harrod's historic vehicles ) Middle.. Walker 1 ton van model K from 1913 Harrod's imported from the USA electric vehicles made by companies Walker.Anderson and Lansden ranging from 10cwt to 2 tons. By 1917 the fleet had grown to over 60 vehicles, The Walker electric van seen here was built in Chicago around 1910 and first registered in the UK in 1919. As far as is known it is the only Walker electric model K in existence and still working. Weighing 2 tons and 7 cwt it has a speed of 12 MPH Is 12 ft in length and has a range of 60 miles on full charge. "x18 cell chloride lead acid batteries- 72v total power. Rear wheel drive axle through reduction gears in both rear wheels.. Harrod's built vav - Model EVM In 1930 consideration was given to replacing the American Walker electric vans, and Harrod's engineering staff designed and built a fleet of 60 vans between 1938 and 1941 in their own workshop. Harrods now have 4 of these vehicles still in running order which are used for deliveries and for display at historic shows. The Steel chassis were manufactured using Siemens / Martin I beam sections. They measure 13 ft 3 ins long and have a speed of 18 mph and a range of 60 miles from full charge. rear drum brakes..
