English: Holland Park Underground Station (Central Line), 19 August 2023.
The station was opened by the Central London Railway (CLR) in July 1900 and was designed by Harry Bell Measures, an independent architect commissioned by the CLR for its first stations. Holland Park was designed with a flat roof so that commercial development could take place above although this never occurred. However, in the 1980’s the flat roof acquired a drum-shaped addition housing lift mechanism for replacement lifts. The station’s architecture is in a Mannerist style and is faced with a part-baked, unglazed pinkish-brown terracotta. Measures was an influence on the Underground Electric Railway of London’s Chief Architect, the great Leslie Green. Pictured is the westbound platform. Note the original clock and decorative bracket. The tunnel itself is very plain, however. |
