Summary edit

Description This family of bugs is referred to as the "patent leather beetles" for their shiny black appearance. This species is the most common in the United States, and its role in the forest is to decompose decaying wood or logs. It burrows into fallen logs (preferably of oak trees), chews up the wood, and excretes a substance called frass which is used by fungi to aid in their own decomposition of wood. Look for sawdust at the base of logs to indicate the presence of these beetles.
