View of Cuba taken during ISS Expedition 10

Summary edit

Description
English: View of Cuba taken during ISS Expedition 10. Bay of Santa Clara, north coast of Cuba.

The bay of Santa Clara lies next East to Cardenas Bay. Cardenas Bay, partly seen here on the left border of the picture, is limited on its west side by the Hicacos peninsula supporting Varadero, off picture on the left). That western part of Santa Clara bay is the elongated form stretching diagonally in the left half of the picture; it is surrounded by Martí municipality (Matanzas Province) on all sides except the north-east with cayo Falcones.
The eastern part of the bay is bordered to the south by Corralillo municipality, Villa Clara Province; to the north by cayos Falcones; to the north-east by cayo Blanquizal and cayo Piedra del Obispo; and to the east by a peninsula over 16 km long off mainland Cuba.

View north-east ahead.
Cayo Cabezos prolonged by Cayo Falcones (we only see half of the latter) hitting the picture's top edge center, and going down left from there.
Then branching in to:

  • Cayos Rana turning away west and cutting through the upper left quadrangle of the picture to reach towards Cayo Cruz del Padre and make up the west end of Cardenas Bay.
  • Cayos de las Cinco Leguas, on line with the N-E/S-W layout of cayo Cabezo and cayo Falcones, pointing a thin south end to the lower right corner of the picture.

The whiter patches by the south side of the bay is La Teja and the Salina Bidos. Playa Musulmanes is about 3 km further west.
In the right half of the picture, the coast makes a 'V'-shape lined on the inside with white : Playa El Salto (Corralillo, Villa Clara Province, see map on openmaps) is at the south point of the 'V'.
Less than 5 km north-west of Playa El Salto is Baños de Elguea (Corralillo): it makes a whiter spot.
The river Sierra Morena reaches the bay near the east end of the 'V'; it feeds a swamp just before it joins the bay. Playa Fe is 2 km east-south-east, just visible here on the left edge of the picture.

North is some 25° off to the west (the bay's layout is nearer to horizontal).
