It usually needs renewal in six years and becomesimpassable in nine years, though the results are some-times much better than this. Cypress blocks were similarly used in Omaha, DesMoines and Kansas City, and failed in two to fouryears. BLOCKS ON SIX-INCH CONCRETE BASE. Hexagonal blocks of mesquite, 5 deep and 4 to8 diameter have been laid at San Antonia, Texas, atcost of $2.80 per square yard, including the six-inchbase. Tamarack-blocks, 3 by 5 by 6 have been laid inMontreal and coated with hot coal-tar and gravel. Redwood blocks, 4 by 6 by 6 seasoned, and boiledin asphalt, have been laid in San Francisco and Oak-land, California. Yellow pine blocks, 4. by 6 by 6 to 10 creosotedwith twelve pounds per cubic foot, were laid in Galves-ton, Texas, in 1895-8. Washington cedar blocks, sterilized and creosotedwith three to four pounds of creosote per cubic foot,were laid on about four miles of Indianapolis streets in1896, and some are in good condition in 1901. Someof the w^ooden pavements built in Indianapolis aboutthat time have swollen and heaved badly. Oregon red cedar and southern yellow-pine heart-wood blocks, 4 by 4 by 9 creosoted with ten poundsper cubic foot, were laid in 1899 in Indianapolis at acost of $2.10 to $2.50 per square yard, including baseand five years guarantee: the joints being filled withpaving cement of nine parts coal-tar to one part asphalt,and the surface being covered with half-inch screeningsof crushed granite. This is a much more costly pave-ment than the others which have been described, andis of a high class, as are the later improved k
