Description

Fossil insect from the Cretaceous of Brazil. (lateral view)

The Santana Formation is a famous lagerstätte in northeastern Brazil. Lagerstätten are soft-bodied fossil deposits. Some well-known examples include the Burgess Shale (Cambrian of British Columbia, Canada), Chengjiang (Cambrian of Yunnan, China), Mazon Creek (Pennsylvanian of Illinois, USA), Solnhofen Limestone (Jurassic of Germany), and the Messel deposit (Eocene of Germany). The Santana is Early Cretaceous in age and includes vertebrates, invertebrates, and plants.

The fossil insect shown above appears to be an orthopteran.

Classification: Animalia, Arthropoda, Insecta, Orthoptera (?)

Stratigraphy: Santana Formation, Aptian to Albian Stages, upper Lower Cretaceous

Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site in the Araripe Basin, northeastern Brazil
