English: A movie showing pattern evolution for a shallow sigmoidal model. The same model as in Figure 1 but with a sigmoidal firing rate 1/{1+exp[−(u−h)/σ]} with σ=0.03. A comparison with the Heaviside model, Figure 1 and the video in Additional file 1, as well as the sigmoid model with smaller σ, Figure 3 and the video in Additional file 1, shows that broadening the sigmoid eventually leads to significant deviations from the Heaviside prediction.
