Description

Following the Castro Revolution, Guantanamo's NE gate became the only official point of contact between Cuban and US territory.

Prior to the revolution, over 3,000 Cuban day workerss commuted to the base.

After the revolution tension were extremely high. Tacitly, the USA and Cuba agreed that all existing workers could keep their jobs, but no new Cuban workers would be hired.

Two elderly gentlemen continued to walk 10 km per day to work on the base until about 2010.

In the 1960s large numbers of Cubans continued to commute to work on the base.
