English: SERE is short for Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape. In the United States some special forces soldiers participated in controversial training programs where they were to experience some of the kinds of treatment they would experience if they were captured by forces that did not comply with the Geneva Conventions. Under the George W. Bush administration American Intelligence officials were authorized to reverse-engineer the SERE program and use its techniques against captured non-state combatants.
