Notes The Austrian Habsburgs were Sigismund Augustus' relatives through Anna Jagellonica. Portrait of a white-bearded man bears a great resemblance to other effigies of the king by Tintoretto. The register of king's clothes from 1572 includes żupans, a type of, most frequently, crimson kaftan worn underneath a fur coat as visible in this portrait, which become a hallmark of a Polish noble and similar to these menioned in inventory of Stephen Bathory, like "a red satin żupan lined with brown-red Chinese silk with silk red buttons" or "a crimson velvet żupan", etc.
