Description |
A pair of guardians usually stands at the entrance of Japanese Buddhist temples. Traditionally, the pair included a closed-mouth figure, one hand displayed as if indicating his potential power, and an open-mouth figure, expelling his full force against evil spirits. Nio figures were usually displayed outdoors, often with just the roof of the entrance gate as protection, and as such were particularly susceptible to weathering. |

Image title | Paired with the close-mouthed Nio at the other side of the entrance to these Asian Art galleries, this muscular figure illustrates two basic features of Japanese art: expressiveness and realism. These guardians originally flanked the central southern entrance gate of a Buddhist temple in Japan. Each figure is constructed of several pieces of carved wood carefully joined together and then covered with thin layers of plaster and paint. The paint has almost disappeared, however. The carved wooden bases are modern replacements. |
