Lt Col John Temple of the Madras Native Infantry was a brother of William Temple, 98th Archbishop of Canterbury. A member of the Army Sanitary Commission to which he was appointed by Sir William Denison. He had been to a party on December 23 1866 at Mr James McIvor's (Bank of Madras) house at Brodie Castle and at 6 pm he went out rowing along with Captain Frederick Hope (ADC for Lord Napier), Mr Bastock of the P&O, and two daughters of McIvor. The boat sank in deep water. Bastock escaped to a small island and his cries were heard by J.D. McIvor. "The Standard" of Dec. 30, 1902 |
