Samuel W. Stilsing. Ex-Police Justice Samuel W. Stilsing died this afternoon at 1 o'clock, at his residence, 190 1/9 Third Street. His death was not unexpected as be has been very low for several days. For a number of years Mr. Stilsing has been a severe sufferer from asthma and the incurable disease undermined his system. He traveled south a couple of mouths ago, hoping to improve his health. He returned feeling much better, but soon after became worse. He was confined to his home most of the time since his return. Yesterday his condition was reported to he critical, but his many friends had hopes that he would pull through. His death was peaceful. Samuel W. Stilsing was born in the old fourth ward in this city 48 years ago the 5th of next month, and he succeeded his father in the butcher business and was one of the most prominent and best known citizens in the county. He was always an active and staunch republican. He was a member of hook and ladder company No. 2 in the volunteer days, and when the paid system was introduced he served two terms as a fire commissioner beginning in 1874. Most of the time ho was president of the board. In 1879 and 1880 he represented the third district in the assembly, and on March 11, 1880, he was appointed police justice. He served in this capacity until six months ago, when he was succeeded by Michael J. O'Donnell. In his career on the bench Justice Stilsing adjudicated over 50,000 cases of every character. In the days of the noted Champion Baseball Club, Mr. Stilsing who was then called "Long headed Sam" was a director, and all knotty points in the national game were submitted to him for decision. Mr. Stilsing always said that he contracted his disease in the old first police court from the poor sanitary regulations. Mr. Stilsing never married. two sisters survive him. His mother and brother have died within the past two years. He was a member of the Exempt Firemen's Association. The funeral which has been placed in charge of Undertaker William Hughes has not been arranged yet. Services will be hold at Grace P. E. Church. Assistant Chief John T. Denmead, of the fire department, who wan a life long friend of the deceased this morning said , "he was a good and noble man and a credit to Jersey City."
