DescriptionKaali meteorite crater 2.jpg |
Looking down into the bright green waters of the largest of the Kaali meteorite craters on Saaremaa island in Estonia. This crater is 110 meters in diameter and 22 meters deep, it was created by a meteor fragment between 4,000 and 7,600 years ago. On the walls of the crater a fortified settlement was founded during the Late Bronze Age. Later the crater was surrounded by a strong stone wall and was probably used as a place for water sacrifices. The bottom sediments of the lake are about 6 meters thick and have yet to be examined by archaelogists or geologists.
