Summary edit

Description
English: Handcrafted wooden sculpture, most likely made by pupils of the progressive boarding-school Freie Schulgemeinde of Wickersdorf near Saalfeld in Thuringia Forest in Germany, presumably during the 1920s. The comradeship named Pinguine (= Penguins) was founded in Wickersdorf and led by teacher Dr. Paul Reiner (1886–1932). Such comradeships mostly consisted of about ten pupils of different age and gender plus their leader, a teacher who acted as primus inter pares. Each comradeship chose a name related to animals and had a flag which showed a logo created after the chosen animal. These flags of different size and color (nine in total) were raised on the school's flag post, right below the school's own flag. They were taken down when absent due to excursions and holidays. In 1925 the comradeship of the Penguins and their leader/teacher were part of a secession from Wickersdorf to found a new boarding-school on the East-Frisian island Juist, a sandbank/shelf between the unique habitat of Wadden Sea and North Sea. The handcrafted wooden sculpture as shown on the picture is part of the inheritance of Dr. Paul Reiner and was still held by his youngest daughter Karin (*1931) in Switzerland in August 2020.
