English: The Kentish Plover is a small wader from the family Charadriidae, breeding along the shores of saline lakes, lagoons, and coasts. They are commonly found in sand dunes, marshes, semi-arid deserts, and tundra regions.
This small, pale plover is characterized by a broken black collar, sandy upperparts, grayish legs, and a fine black bill. During the breeding season, they exhibit a distinctive black mask and black markings on the sides of their breast. In nonbreeding plumage, these black markings turn brown. They primarily inhabit coastal areas such as sandy beaches, dry mudflats, and salt ponds near water, and can occasionally be found inland. Migrant Kentish Plovers often join flocks of other shorebirds. Documenting the maternal behavior of the Kentish Plover reveals the challenges faced during the incubation period. Kentish Plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus) lay their eggs in shallow scrapes on the ground, prepared by the male. The average clutch size is three eggs, which hatch after 25–26 days of incubation. Both parents share incubation duties, with females incubating mostly during the day and males at night. Within a few hours of hatching, the parents lead the chicks away from the nest to enhance their survival chances. The process of hatching and protecting the eggs involves facing numerous threats from other birds and environmental challenges, showcasing the resilience and dedication of the Kentish Plover parents. This bird was documented at Bhigwan, Maharashtra, India. The Music used from Creative Commons No Copyright Music.
