Subject Baseball--Portraits Baseball--Photographs Description Pictured here as the Chicago White Sox manager, William J. "Kid" Gleason (1866–1933) played for seven teams in the majors in 1888-1912 as a second baseman and pitcher. He managed the White Sox in 1919-1923. During his playing career, Gleason compiled 138 wins and 131 losses, and had four 20-win seasons. He batted .261 lifetime, with 1,946 hits and 824 RBI, hitting .300+ in three seasons. As a player, Gleason was a member of National League pennant winners in 1894 and 1895 with the Philadelphia Quakers. Gleason managed the Chicago White Sox in 1919-1923, and was the team’s manager in the 1919 World Series when the Black Sox Scandal took place. He was not involved in the alleged fix. After leaving the White Sox, Gleason was on the coaching staff for the Philadelphia Athletics until 1931.
