Description
Bowl, Shiwan stoneware cup with Jun style glazeQing dynasty, 19th-20th centuryDuring the Qing dynasty, Jun ware dating to the Song dynasty was greatly admired. Jun glazes were copied at the porcelain kilns of Jingdezhen, and also at other pottery centres. One such was the Shiwan complex just outside Guangzhou (Canton), that manufactured figurines, architectural and decorative ceramics, from the late Ming dynasty onwards. A peak of production occurred in the 19th-20th century, when this cup was made, for it was purchased in 1912 at Bukowskis. It bears a beautiful opalescent blue glaze, based on Jun ware. The cup is in the shape of an opening blossom, and is supported on three feet in the form of twiggy branches with blossom buds.
