Description

A house in Worcester, where in September 1651 Charles II hid, after escaping his enemies from the Battle of Worcester at the end of the English Civil War.

It dates from 1577. Other than Charles II escape from Cromwell's forces into exile, it was also the site of a dungeon where Judge William Berkeley (born in the building in 1684) kept his victims who were awaiting trial.

Upstairs is where was supposedly the King's bedchamber where he held council to his officers.

King Charles House is a Grade II* listed building. It was formerly listed Cornmarket No. 5 King Charles House. This is no 29 New Street. Dated 1577, front bay rebuilt 1670, as to annexe no 4 and 5 Cornmarket. For Richard Durant and William Blagden. Timber-framed building with rendered infill. Is a three storey building.

Originally the house went around the corner. But in the 18th century, the corner was replaced with a new house and shop, 4 Cornmarket / 30 New Street.

The building includes the date AD 1577.

This is a photo of listed building number 1390020.

King Charles House, Worcester

There were roadworks on this road, so couldn't get a proper full frontage shot of the house on New St.
