After the departure of his Majesty GeorgeIV. from Ireland, in the y^ar 1821, subscrip-tions were raised by the loyal inhabitants forthe purpose of erecting some national monumentto comraemmorate the happy event. A diffe-rence of opinion having arisen among the mem-bers of the committee selected for the purpose,on what the money should be expended, a con-siderable time elapsed without adopting any ofthe various plans proposed. At length itwas resolved to refer the business to his Majestyfor decision, and it being suggested that a Bridgeover the Liffey on the present site, would notonly prove useful to the citizens but also orna-mental to that quartef of the city, it was re-commended to appropriate the funds to that pur-pose, which was accordingly adopted. Thefoundation of this structure was laid by theMarquis Wellesley on the 12th of Dec. 1827.It will consist of one metal arch of one hun-
