Description

Square in Aix-en-Provence with law courts and an old church.

This old church in Aix-en-Provence is the L'Eglise de la Madeleine.

Old Dominican Church built in the 13th century and transformed in the 17th century. The front dates from the 19th century. Closed for restoration in 2011.

Sure I saw graffiti that said "no photos" in French (didn't want to take that though).

The Church of the Madeleine is a religious building up of Preachers at Aix-en-Provence . This place owes its name to a convent Dominican foundations on which was erected the church of Sainte-Madeleine, more commonly called Church of the Madeleine, from 1691 to 1703 by architect Laurent Vallon. The Aachen architect Henry Revoil reworked the facade in 1855 to 1860 . The building has long been considered the most beautiful building of worship in the Bouches-du-Rhone . Fonscolombe Emmanuel (1810-1875) is one of the most famous masters of the chapel.

The Madeleine church is undergoing renovation and stabilization of the building. The site is closed to the public since 2006 and is expected to reopen in 2013 , according to Hall .

It is the subject of a classification as historical monuments since 24 October 1988

History

In 1363 , a fire ravaged the Dominican convent of priors. It is this event and the dilapidated building that encourages consuls from Aix to apply for reconstruction under the leadership of Guigonnet Jarente , Lord of Monclar and Gémenos , a supporter of the Second House of Anjou After the death of Queen Jeanne . While Jarente died on 20 January 1401 , before completion, it is buried in the sanctuary of the church .

Organ

The organ of the Madeleine, which contains 3,500 pipes, is the work of Jean-Esprit Isnard and date of 1743 . This will build the organ in the cathedral two years later. The buffet is crowned arms of Pope Pius VI.
