DescriptionLascar Germany, a world leader in recycling - A public trash disposal (4472269348).jpg |
English: Germany currently recycles into new products or fuel some 62 per cent of its lightweight packaging, compared with about 20 per cent in neighbouring countries such as France and Austria, which largely incinerate the materials or don't collect mixed packaging in the first place. In 2006, each German collected more than 60 kilograms of reusable packaging, glass and paper, according to the main recycling company, DSD. Members of the paper recycling team in Berlin (the Tonnenboys) are so popular, people ask for their autographs at public events. In 2006, each German collected an average of 64 kilograms of recyclable packages, glass and paper — saving the amount of energy needed to power 1.1 million households, says Duales System Deutschland (DSD), the company that administers the system [theglobeandmail.com] The European Member States with the highest recycling rates for municipal waste were Germany (46%), Belgium (39%), Sweden (37%), Estonia and Ireland (both 34%). Composting of municipal waste was most common in Austria (38%), Italy (33%), Luxembourg and the Netherlands (both 28%), and not done at all in Bulgaria, Cyprus and Romania. - Composting and recycling accounted for over 50% of municipal waste treated in Germany (64%), Belgium (62%), the Netherlands (60%) and Austria (59%) [Eurostat] |
