Description

"Letter to unknown recipient : “Onbekend”" by Erik Pevernagie, oil on canvas, 80 x 100 cm

Each letter has a story with a past. Each letter is loaded with an intention. Each message comes with a project and hopes for a future. Each sending has a human background. It has a life and it can breathe.

With the abstract close-up of a 'Letter to unknown recipient,' the question of origin and identity is raised and the query about finding out “who is who?” is highlighted in the background of a postal quest.

Each letter may be the representation of a living being. Each mail may be the illustration of a sender’s drive, motivation or hope. When some post has not found its right recipient, it will glide into a no-man’s-land, erring from place to place, in an unending voyage of vagrancy and will finally slip into a junk mail dungeon.

It will be disposed of with the label “unknown”. Sometimes it will reflect the physical suffering and damage, it had to undergo during its pilgrimage. Due to the many stickers and scribbles, which have been affixed in the course of its postal expedition, it may have taken the outlook of a worn out street map or an old chart of a disabled soldier coming back from a long war.
