Text

edit

For Contempt of Jersey Justice. Jersey City, New Jersey; June 1, 1889. August Mueller, who was the collector in this city for Lindauer & Co., tobacconist, was sent to jail this morning for contempt of court. His employers were dissatisfied with his returns and had a receiver appointed to examine his accounts. Mueller refused to surrender his books and his arrest followed.

Notes

edit

Lindauer & Co. was also used to recruit United States Civil War substitutes. Their tobacco stores were most likely just a cover for their numbers game outlets after their arrests and prosecutions in 1881 for operating quasi-legal out-of-state lottery ticket resale outlets.
