Description
English: Stockings or Boothose of linen, 37x37 thread count per square cm. Cut into four parts: two cuffs, legs and feet, which are sewn with backstitch. The upper edge of the cuff ends with 14 arch-shaped tabs. The shape of the tabs is reminiscent of reticella (needlelace)-edgings. The cuff is lined with a coarse linen that protects the back of the embroidery. The cuff height is 28 cm and its upper circumference is 68 cm. The cuffs are embroidered in black silk and gold wire, primarily in stem stitch. The motif is the same on both sides of the collar. The main subject is a cornucopia with fruits incluidng apples, pears and grapes. At the side of the horn is a bird. The remaining area is covered by meandering leaves and stems, and flowers such as tulips, roses and lily of the valley. Each tab on the collar has a small embroidered flower. The motifs are decorated with gold threads (gold-wrapped silk core), sewn in a cable pattern. Over the seams and around the top edge is a plain gold band. The embroidery is consistent with the English type of embroidery with black thread (blackwork) that can be seen on the linen garments from the late 1500s and early 1600s. The sock and foot pieces are cut on the bias to provide better elasticity and fit. The leg pice has a small triangular gusset from the middle of the back seam up to the cuff. The foot is seamed in front of the toe.
