LIVERPOOL & MEMPHIS:
ROCK ‘N’ SOUL MATES

Liverpool, on the banks of the River Mersey, and Memphis on the mighty
Mississippi River are bonded by their definitive music heritage.

In 1954, Elvis Presley ignited the Rock ‘n’ Roll revolution from Sun Studio
in Memphis and heralded in a new era in music. The reverberations of that
rebellious sound were felt as far away as Liverpool, where a young John
Lennon took up Rock ‘n’ Roll. Joined by Paul, George, and ultimately
Ringo, they forged their own careers and changed the world. The Beatles’
early career featured several Sun-era songs before they elevated Pop
music to new heights. From Beale Street to Mathew Street, we salute Elvis
and The Beatles, Memphis and Liverpool, the Home of Blues, Soul,
Rock ‘n’ Roll and Pop music respectively. The cities continue to help tell
each other's story and foster unique collaborations, including the grobal
50th Anniversary of Rock ‘n’ Roll celebration in 2004. The iconic sounds
from both cities changed the world and continue to influence music today.
