In 1857, H.Y. Hind and his assistants made some fairly detailed reconnaissance surveys of the Red River Plain, and obtained further information on the area from local land surveyors and other informants. The map which resulted may be regarded as the first topographic map of the area extending from the 49th parallel to the mouth of the Winnipeg river. All the parish boundaries in the Red River settlement are shown, and so are settled areas, the southern limit of the settlement, and churches and windmills. Note the local name Frog Plain, the ancient lake ridges and observations such as “Rafts of Timber Seen on Bank of this River”. There are also eleven insert maps and diagrams (including the first geologic section of any part of Manitoba), which show an amazing amount of detail. There is a section through the Shield showing the characteristics hills, and another across a beach ridge. Natural vegetation is shown, but perhaps not to accurately in those places where it conflicted with the need to indicate settlement on the map. The map gives one an excellent feeling of the nature of the Red River Settlement at this time. It contains a tremendous amount of information, and as a result is sometimes undisciplined. Much of the data is conveyed in short descriptions, occasionally leaving the viewer with the impression that [they are] looking at a field manuscript, as the remark about the rafts and another on the animals seen grazing indicate. Hind’s comments also demonstrate that he was very much aware of the problem of flooding in the area, and the possibilities of remedial damage.
