Ne York Times caption edit

Black women such as Mary Church Terrell — eighth from left in the back row, at a conference for the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom in 1919 — often found themselves alone in rooms of white suffragists. Terrell implored organizations such as NAWSA to include more women of color. “Seeking no favors because of our color, nor patronage because of our needs, we knock at the bar of justice, asking an equal chance,” she said at their 1898 convention.
