I have a two letters to him when he was in Madras, both dated 15th August 1914 and 1914. 15th August 1914 letter presented iwth silver wristwatch in recognation of zeal and interest in instructing ie training troops, signatures of peole that contributed compliments. Second letter dated 1914, presneted by few members of "B" Boy, Madras Volunteer Guards with gold ring.

Copy of Madras Mail dated 23rd Sept. 1914, with a handwritten note:"I was in charge of a maching fun covering these oil tanks and harbour at the end of the pier one quarter miles out from Fort (recommended and promoted to Sergeant by General) next day. Bombardment is bom of Madras by the "Emden".

Warrant of appointment for my grandfather, William Edward Harney, as an officer in 1917. 2nd lieutenant. 20th May 1917.

He is mentioend in a book by Sheehy Skeffington, May I Please the Court - in which he appears as a Sergeant Harney around 1916 - 1917, somewhere on the Western Front,

He was at Gallipoli and he spoke about being there. I was one of youngest, but he did tell me various stories. One story about him confusing sound of bullets for buzzing of bees on battlefied. Have one medal for bravery from Gallipoli - Scimiter Hill - other three the standard medals (1914/1915 Star; Victory medal, campaign medal). Other five medals not so sure, but believe belong to Great Grandfather.... two from Nile (Tand Sudan campaign, three 1st Boer War. Dress medals. We think he may also have been in Royal Dublin fusiliers.
