DescriptionMes Aynak archeologists camp.jpg | An archeologists' camp sits beneath a recently excavated Buddhist monastery at Mes Aynak, in Logar province, Afghanistan. More than 250 Afghan labourers are working with a team of international archeologists to excavate the ancient settlement, roughly 35km south of Kabul. They have already uncovered a series of four monasteries full of murals and statues, thought to date from the 3rd to the 7th centuries AD. The monasteries and settlements are on the site of an ancient copper mine - which may have first been used by humans up to 5000 years ago. Rights to the copper deposit, which is one of the largest in the world, were sold by the Afghan government to a Chinese state mining company in 2007 for $3billion. | ||
