Since the 1930s, microphones have been a key element in any recording session. They are the 'ears' of the studio, as they transform sound into electronic signals which can then be recorded. Abbey Road Studios' large collection of microphone is one of the best in the world. Vintage microphones are extremely valuable and prized by any studio. Abbey Road's unique collection comprises a large number of originals, spanning decades. It is a working collection, as the microphones used on recording sessions today are often the very ones that have been used by legendary artists throughout the studios' long history.

When transistors began to replace valves, EMI was at the forefront, developing the new technology into mixing desks. This EMI desk was massive compared to earlier designs, and had many more features than the earlier REDD desks. These models, built from 1969 to around 1974, were the last of the EMI-only designed studio desks. The TG desk was used on legendary albums such as Abbey Road by The Beatles and Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. The 'TG' in the name is an old handover from the pre-EMI days of the 1920s, when the label was called The Gramophone Company. |
