Rethymnon, Crète, Grèce La forteresse a été construite sur une colline de la vielle ville de Rethymnon, par les Vénitiens, entre 1573 et 1580 pour protéger l'île d'une invasion des Ottomans. Cet ouvrage imposant, comme les autres forteresses vénitiennes édifiées dans les principales villes de Crète en raison du danger ottoman, ne les empêcha pas de conquérir la totalité de l'île en 1669. La domination turque dura juqu'en 1898. La forteresse de Rethymnon sur Wikipedia fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forteresse_de_R%C3%A9thymnon Rethymnon est probablement la ville de Crète qui a le mieux conservé son caractère ancien avec beaucoup de vestiges vénitiens et turcs. Réthymnon s’est développée à nouveau quand les Vénitiens, alors maîtres de l’île, cherchèrent à établir un centre commercial intermédiaire entre Héraklion et La Canée.
