Description

Mycena cystidiosa G. Stev.

Image location: Swans Crossing State Forest, New South Wales, Australia

This fungi attracted my attention because of its extremely long stem. I had remembered reading about this Mycena but had not observed one till this days outing. The reference is from B. Fuhrer. The extract reads—- Caps to 20mm across, broadly conical, radially striate. Possibly Australia’s tallest Mycena. Stems have abundant white basal hairs and can be up to 200mm long. Another distinctive character is the often plentiful hair like rhizomorphs with minute capitate tips associated with the fungus. Common on decaying forest litter Spores variable c.8 × 5.5 Micro-m, ellipsoidal, smooth. Spore print white. (end extract) The only difference in this explanation was that the fungi was growing on the side of a living tree. I was unable to get a photo of the fungus base. The top central area of the fungi was dark brown becoming lighter as it expanded to the outer edge of the cap.

The second added image is what I also believe to be Mycena cystidiosa with an

Amauroderma rude
