歌舞伎の「勧進帳」は、19世紀後半に作られた舞踊劇である。この錦絵は、1890年5月の上演時に合わせて製作販売されたものである。三人の男の目が互いに火花を散らしている。舞台の設定は12世紀末。源氏の大将源義朝の九男、義経(左下の人物・五世尾上菊五郎<1844~1903>)とその家来達は、兄の将軍源頼朝に追われて、山伏に変装して逃げる途中、加賀国安宅に着く。ここで、頼朝より彼らを捕まえることを命じられたこの地の城主・富樫左衛門(右横の人物・初世市川左団治<1842~1904>)から、厳しい詮議を受ける。このとき、家来の弁慶(中央の人物・九世市川団十郎<1838~1903>)は、とっさの機転で、自分たちは義経一行ではなく本物の山伏であると主張、その証拠として、戦いで焼失した奈良の東大寺を再建するために諸国を歩き寄付を集めているのだと言い、何も書かれていない白紙の巻物を、「勧進帳」(寺院再建の寄付を集めるため、その趣旨を記した文書。)と偽り(その偽りが見破られることを知りつつ)空で読み上げる。嘘がばれる覚悟をして相手を睨んでいる弁慶、対峙している富樫はその嘘に感づき、太刀の柄に手をかけている。山伏達の荷物を運ぶ従者に変装している義経は、嘘が気付かれたことを知り、戦闘態勢に入っている。それぞれの人物の複雑な心理や状況を、役者の表情やしぐさで見事に表現している。背景に描かれた巨大な松と若竹は、能の舞台の背景に倣って描かれたものである。作者は豊原国周(1835~1900)。幕末から明治にかけて活躍、最後の浮世絵師といわれた。歌舞伎絵を得意とし多くの役者を描き、傑作を遺した。
