漢詩を作る際に韻字を探すための書として編まれたもの。国書として最初に上梓されたもので、大変便利な書であったため、中世期において頻繁に改版され、また全国各地で刊行された。『下学集』や『節用集』といった辞書の類は、いずれも本書の影響を受けているとされ、慶長以前の刊本だけでも20種以上に及ぶという。嘉元4(1306)年の虎関師錬自序、徳治2(1307)年の叟一寧跋をもつ本書の、刊記のある最古の版は応永19(1412)年刊本とされている。当館でも数種を架蔵するが、該書は、料紙の大きさにたいして匡郭内の大きさが極端に小さく、余白を広くとった特殊な形をもつ。表紙に「三重韻」と墨書。上平の部分49丁と下平の部分47丁のみ存巻。余白部分の書き込みは、一部他筆も交じるが、ほとんどが京都の円光寺開山三要元(きつ)(1548-1612)によるものとされている。最終葉表裏の識語及び表紙の墨書等により、三要元(きつ)から2世玉質宗樸へ、さらに玉質宗樸から4世天岩明啓へと相伝され、その後累代、円光寺に伝わったものであることが分かる。
