木曽義仲を征討した源頼朝は、娘の婿である義仲嫡男の清水冠者義基(伝本により義高、吉高とも)を追討しようとする。これを知った姫の計らいで義基は奥州へ逃れるが、捕らえられ斬首される。父頼朝を恨み、姫は思い死にする。『吾妻鏡』元暦元年(1184)4月21、26日条における清水冠者と頼朝の姫君との悲恋に材を得た物語で、伝本は慶長9年(1604)写本(北海道大学図書館蔵)をはじめ、古活字本や版本、奈良絵本など数多く伝存し、諸本間での異同も著しい。掲出本は、寛文・延宝頃写と推定される横型奈良絵本1冊であるが、もとは3冊で合綴の際に誤って下・中・上の順に綴じた状態となっている(各冊、紺紙金泥の原表紙を付す)。料紙本文の頭尾には等間隔で針目安(書写のための目印)が認められ、制作の過程が窺える。なお、伝承文学資料集第2輯『室町期物語(1)』(三弥井書店、1967年)に掲出本の翻刻が収められている。(恋田知子)(2019.11)
