幕医栗本丹洲(1756-1834)の魚介譜のうちの1点。カレイ・ヒラメ・ウシノシタの類、計30点(最終図は他筆なので、除いた)を収める。最初の図「おとひめのうちは、こおりがれい」はダルマガレイの幼魚で、カレイの幼魚の図は江戸時代では珍しい。また、末尾にカレイとヒラメの見分け方についてややこしい説明があるが、両者に動物学的な差異は無いので、現在いう「左ヒラメに右カレイ」(身体の左側に目があればヒラメ、右側に目があればカレイ)も含めて、基準を設けても意味は無い。『物類称呼』(1775刊)が「畿内・西国はともにカレイ。江戸は大をヒラメ、小をカレイ。常陸・上総・下総は大をカレイ、小をヒラメ」と記すように、単なる方言の問題である。(磯野直秀)
