本書は、守覚法親王(1150-1202)の作と伝えられ、親王の没年から推定して鎌倉時代初期の成立とされる。内容は、仏家の一年間の行事を簡単明瞭な文体で書いたもので、進状とそれに対する返状の形をとったいわゆる消息文の文例集である。和漢朗詠集などと共に、文章の規範として、また習字学習の手本として用いられることが多く、その伝本も能筆家によって書かれている場合が多い。編成は、第一条から第二七条までの合計五四通を収め、一月から十二月までを月別順に配当している。該当本は、巻首を欠いているので七通不足しているが、正安4(1302)年の書写奥書があり、『釈氏往来』の最古写本として知られる。
