Description

New Orleans, 1936.

Original caption: "WPA crews demolished the old Charity Hospital buildings to make way for the new $12,000,000 structure built by PWA. Exterior."

"WPA" = Works Progress Administration; "PWA" = Public Works Administration
View is looking riverwards across Tulane Avenue from roof of old Charity building under process of demolition. The Church partially visible across the street (since demolished) was the original St. Joseph's. In the 1890s after St. Joseph's moved to the new larger church building across Claiborne Avenue, it was rededicated as St. Katherine's, serving the area's "Negro" Roman Catholics.
