Unbuttresses, slightly spurred bole, divided at 20 ft. into the main upright stems. Height, 70 ft. Bole 20 ft. d.b.h. 18 ins. Bark 1/3 in. thick, outer bark red brown, fissured, peeling off in thin narrow flakes, under bark glossy, dark brownish red, soft, brittle. Wood, sap yellow brown, heartwood deep red, hard and heavy, fine textured, rays and pores hard to see even with lens. Leaves, thin but tough, medium green, glossy above, light green, glabrous beneath, prominently oil dotted. Flowers, calex pale green, hairy, corolla and stamens bright yellow. Fruit, bluish-black, small, ovoid berry with persistant sepals. In montane rainforest, dominated by Nothofagus carrii, Phyllocladus hypophyllus, Podocarpus imbricatus.Alt. 7000 ft.
