Description
English: NSWR W Thow Type 'BX' 1st class Express Lavatory Car No.BX 1142 at Trainworks, the New South Wales Railway Museum, Thirlmere, 31 March 2016. Thow designed the 'BC' Class in 1890 with new standards of comfort, and a longer version consisted of three types: 'BX' 1st class, 'LFX' 2nd class, 'CX' composite. They were similar to Thow's coaches when he was on the South Australian Railways, which in turn were based on LNWR express coaches in the UK. A batch in 1896 introduced toilets. In the 1920's & 30's many were modernised for continuing use as they were so robust, but this did not include BX 1142. It lasted in service until 1965, the only hange in its lifetime being the replacement of gas lighting by electricty!
