Description
English: 28 December 2017. Eastern end of Carbuncle Passage.

The metal "pergola" structures were erected at both ends of the alley to prevent commercial (and illegal) vehicles carrying waste from driving in and tipping waste along the alley.

Nowadays some litter and rubbish is sometimes left at both ends. Plus some is dumped from rear gardens - perhaps by landlords, builders, or a few residents.

The alley is unusually wide because it runs above one of the channels of a culverted local stream: the Moselle Brook. The name Carbuncle seems to be variation of the earlier name "Garbell Ditch". This information is from a friend of ours, Chris Protz one of several local historians. She told me that in Tudor times the ditch - then an open stream - was known as the Town Sewer.

It's still an issue though it has been partly cleaned-up - including a programme to detect and correct connections of sewage pipes into storm drains which empty into streams and rivers. § Website by Paul Talling London's Lost Rivers.
